Houma Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center, in Houma, La., has received the 2011 Louisiana Hospital Capstone Quality Award, presented by eQHealth Solutions, the Medicare quality improvement organization for Louisiana. The award recognizes LJCMC as one of only 24 hospitals in Louisiana for achieving certain improvements in the quality of healthcare given to their patients.

eQHealth Solutions established the award to recognize Louisiana hospitals that successfully implement quality initiatives directed toward improving inpatient care, specifically in the areas of acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical care. CMS has designated these areas as national healthcare priorities.

"This award recognizes the enduring dedication of our staff to the consistent delivery of quality healthcare practices for the benefit of our patients," said Rhonda Green, LJCMC CEO. "We're pleased that our success in this endeavor has placed us among the best in the state."

The LJCMC quality improvement team uses nationally recognized, evidence-based practices to improve patient care. Shane Robichaux, Quality Management Director, Tonia Chauvin, RN Supervisor, Shanna Ledet, RN, MN, and Stacey Pellegrin, RN, lead these efforts. Dr. Michael Garcia, LJCMC Medical Director, leads medical staff efforts.

Based on select criteria and measured improvements in specified clinical areas, including patient satisfaction survey scores, the award recognizes achievements by acute care hospitals of all sizes, in both urban and rural areas, for high-level quality inpatient care. To determine success, eQHealth Solutions reviews for each hospital clinical process-of-care measures and the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) used to measure patient experience.

"Healthcare providers in Louisiana have committed to reducing the rates of infections, pressure ulcers, surgical injuries, unnecessary hospital readmissions and many other key measures of healthcare quality," said Gary Curtis, CEO of eQHealth Solutions. "At our annual Medicare Quality Summit, eQHealth was proud to recognize the providers and facilities that are making health better for the people and communities they serve."
